The photos below were submitted by J. R. Crocker. They were taken while the ships were moored at Pier 1, Naval Station San Diego Christmas 1969. The Naval Station was holding its usual Christmas ships decorating contest. The Shelton painted their guns in candy stripes and pointed them straight up to look like candles. Several days after these photos were taken the Shelton received a call from the Admiral telling the Captain to restore the guns to their proper position and color. The Shelton won the contest.
