An
excellent book.
Murder on
Pratas Reef is a Historical
Novel set against the backdrop
of the actual events associated
with the grounding of USS
Frank Knox (DDR-742) and her
eventual rescue more than a
month later.
In Ainsworth's book, when the
Knox hits the reef, a murder
is taking place aboard the
ill-fated destroyer. Continuing
characters from his previous
book, Thunder and Storm: The
Haverfield Incident, come to
play important roles in solving
this case while assisting in the
37-day effort to free the Knox
from the reef's grip.
Ainsworth also illuminates the
little-discussed racial tensions
of the mid-60s, bringing the
problem into sharp focus. The
interaction between destroyer
and destroyer tender show off
the fact that Murder on
Pratas Reef is informative,
as a historic novel should be
but is also highly entertaining.
I definitely recommend this book
to all who enjoy military
fiction. |
