NOW HEAR THIS!
FORMER DD-850 FIELD
DAY VETERANS
If you remember and attended some of the wild and productive field days
aboard the USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. from 1977 to 1985, you may have
what the ship now needs. Pieces or mementos of the ship itself!
Back then we would strip out entire compartments, such as all of after
berthing, the After Officers Quarters, and part of the aft engine room
to create new display and exhibit areas. As large quantities of the
ship were ripped out, they were put on the pier for scrap and
souvenirs. You were told you could take anything you needed or it was
going into a dumpster.
Over the past decade, the mindset has totally reversed aboard KENNEDY
and displays have been removed in favor of the replication of actual
shipboard compartments. This return to authenticity includes the DASH
Hangar, Ship’s Office, Ship fitter shop, and much more. We want to
restore as many spaces on Kennedy as possible and we need those mementos
back! We need the personnel lockers, peacoat lockers, bunk frames,
stanchions, vises, and other items that you may have taken.
If you haven’t already done so, go to the NAVSOURCE website under
destroyers and look at the old photos of field days aboard the JPK and
join us for a new field day for new memories.
