Welcome to the
USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. DD-850 Volunteer/Donation page

Labor & Materials Wanted

In reality this is a bulletin board, linking want ads, volunteers and all other necessities required to not only keep our ship going, but also to help us progress in our aggressive maintenance and restoration programs.  Remember, the ship tells your story to the world and especially to future generations after we are long gone.

There are a few things to consider before replying to an ad;

1 - Establish contact with the responsible person for any particular ad.

2 - Know the details before accepting the ad.

3 - We request that you follow through to completion with any accepted ad,
including shipping material to the ship.

4 - For certain donations, our parent organization, a non-profit corporation,
may be able to issue you a form so that you may use the legitimate value
of the donation as a tax deduction.

6. MORSE CODE: If you are local to Fall River, MA. and somewhat good at Morse Code, are you willing to give 1 or 2 evenings a month to teach and influence the youth of America by letting them use our 12" signal lights under your direction?

7. BAKELITE/BRASS SHIPBOARD ID TAGS:  You say you're retired, your brother/cousin owns an engraving business and you need to keep busy?  This is it!

Remember the 1,000's of tags on a destroyer, over each space, on every electrical and other box on the ship?  We are missing about half of them. You can donate your time and material making them.  We will provide exact dimensions, proper wording, even where and what size to drill the holes.

CONTACT PERSON: Ed Zajkowski     Email: edz765@hotmail.com

8. COFFEE: Remember that thick, rich black #6 oil that fueled our destroyers?

The hard  working volunteers that try  to keep the ship going thrive on it, except we call it coffee. Do you work or know someone that works or owns a food business?  Get them to donate and send us a case of canned coffee!  The richer the better, Tin Can Sailors are a tough breed.  The spoon needs to stand up straight in the cup.  You remember those days.

CONTACT PERSON: Steve Whynot     Email: sk1_whynot@hotmail.com

9. T-SHIRTS, GOLF SHIRTS, CHAMBRAY SHIRTS: Do you have connections in the clothing industry?

We destroyer volunteers have pride but lack uniformity.  Care to donate monogrammed shirts for the crew so that we look our best when hosting YOUR reunion or teaching the youth of America our rich history?

CONTACT PERSON: Ed Zajkowski     Email: edz765@hotmail.com

10. LUBE OIL PURIFIER: If you pull this one off, you get the keys to the ignition!

We need a De Laval lube oil purifier, Model  65N-13!!  If you thought that sounded easy, we really need 3 of them.  The Navy took ours in the 1970's.  Our goal is to get 2 for cosmetic (not runable) restoration and one working to purify our diesel oil supply.

(This is where the shipping guy in ad 5 gets to strut his stuff!)

CONTACT PERSON: Steve Whynot     Email: sk1_whynot@hotmail.com

12. TOOLS: The need for tools never ends.

Here are some ideas of what we REALLY need to continue our success:
Socket sets, battery powered drills, Sawzalls, screwdrivers,
combination wrenches, hammers, chisels, wire cutters, diagonals,
adjustable wrenches, hacksaws and blades . . . you get the idea.

13. YOU: If you live in the area of Massachusetts, Rhode Island or Connecticut, consider a day or a weekend donating your time or services aboard the Kennedy.  There's endless dirty work and plenty of finesse stuff also.

See our website WWW.USSJPKENNEDYJR.ORG for the work schedule.

14. ARTIFACTS: Do you have historical documents or artifacts from a destroyer that belong aboard a Gearing class destroyer.  Consider donating them to the Kennedy.

15. CASH FOR VOLUNTEER TIME: Are you aware that your company may donate cash to us based on the hours you legitimately donate as a volunteer? Wal-Mart does it, so do others.  Ask about it.

16. AIR COMPRESSOR PARTS: Our 2 compressors are a bit tired and need overhauls.  Do you have contacts that can get us parts to rebuild our machines?

We have Worthington 2 stage, 3 cylinder, air cooled, type x compressors.  If you have access to donated parts, I will send the part numbers needed, such as, PLATE, VALVE--PLT-2686A.  Our machines are 6x6x4 1/2 with a 2 3/4" stroke.
